One device ignited but failed to detonate, while the second was lit but subsequently dropped on the street. The IEDs were compromised of a glass jar surrounded by nuts, screws and bolts, in addition to an attached fuse. Preliminary testing showed that one device contained TATP, a highly volatile explosive.
Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi were arrested at the scene and later charged in connection with the attack.
The following day, another IED was recovered from a vehicle linked to the two suspects on East End Avenue between 81st and 82nd Street. The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force has taken the lead in launching a terrorism investigation.
