On 7 July 2026 at 09:21, two IEDs functioned in the Al Hijaz District of Damascus. One device was placed in a trash can and the other in a vehicle, approximately 125 metres from a Four Seasons hotel. Specialised EOD units had detected the IEDs and were in the process of rendering them safe when the detonations occurred. As a result, one person was killed and a further thirty-six were wounded. French President Emmanuel Macron had been staying at the Four Seasons hotel during a state visit to meet with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa. Syria’s Internal Security Forces have since arrested several suspects, whom they claim are linked to Islamic State (IS).

Just days prior, an IED detonated in a café near the Palace of Justice, also in Al Hijaz District. There were thirty-three total casualties. Since the beginning of May 2026, the Open Source Threat Database (OSTD) has recorded nine IED events in Damascus and the surrounding areas. In response, the Syrian Ministry of Interior have ramped up precautionary protective measures in the city, including heavily armed patrols. Investigations into the recent attacks are ongoing, with special security units conducting field operations across Damascus, resulting in the seizure of explosive materials and other equipment.
