On 5 April 2026, explosives were discovered south of the Serbian-Hungarian border in Tresnjevac, Serbia. Reports state that two backpacks, placed along the TurkStream gas pipeline, contained four kilograms of plastic explosives, in addition to detonators and det cord. The TurkStream infrastructure is critical to the supply of Russian natural gas to Hungary. An emergency meeting of the National Defence Council was subsequently convened by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

Ahead of Hungarian elections due to take place on 12 April, opinion polls show that Prime Minister Orban faces significant opposition from Peter Magyar, leader of the Tisza party. Seat projections from the final government-independent poll show a two-third majority win for the Tisza party.
