On 10 September 2026, the Peoples Defence Force (PDF) targeted the Tatmadaw controlled Tada-U air base with a number of FPV UAVs equipped with fibre-optics. Media posted online showed a Russian-made Yakovlev Yak-130 light aircraft amongst the equipment targeted. After the initial wave, a colonel of the Air Force was reportedly killed, and others were injured in a follow up attack after he arrived to inspect the airbase. The Tatmadaw have denied reports that any equipment was damaged, instead claiming that the UAVs were intercepted by anti-UAV netting and other defences.
A total of 20 Yak-130 aircraft were delivered to Myanmar in batches between 2017-2021. After the coup in 2021, the military Junta used these aircraft to carry out strikes with unguided missiles and bombs to target pro-democracy forces as well as civilians. Alongside the attack on the airbase, several Tatmadaw ships have been targeted and sunk by FPV UAVs. Reports claim that from the end of August to September at least 16 ships have been sunk by the PDF and Kachin Independence Army (KIA).
