On 25 April 2026, General Sadio Camara, Mali’s Minister of Defence, was killed in a targeted SVBIED attack at his residence in Kati, Koulikoro Region. Conducted by Jamaath Nusrathal Islam wal Muslimeen (JNIM) and Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) rebels, the attack took place amid a wave of coordinated attacks across the country and represents a major blow to the Malian Armed Forces (FaMa).

Mali is currently ruled by a military junta led by General Assimi Goïta, who first seized power in a 2020 coup. The junta initially received popular support, pledging to address the long-running security crisis sparked by the Tuareg rebellion in the north, which was later hijacked by Islamist militants.
