German authorities have located a UAV with an explosive device at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The UAV was found metres away from a Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft at 23:40 on 4 August 2026. Subsequently, flight operations were suspended while a robot was deployed to the UAV. Leipzig/Halle Airport serves as a key transportation hub and as a temporary base for Ukraine’s Antonov Airlines.
Images of the UAV circulating online showed a quadcopter with a package. Reports state that a detonator was found, and initial tests indicated the presence of explosive nitrates. Further reports stated that a DHL cargo plane collided with an unknown flying object at an altitude of 400 m, 6 km from the airport.
Saxony’s Interior Minister Armin Schuster said: “The incidents at Leipzig Airport constitute a very serious security event. Consequently, state and federal security authorities have been investigating hand-in-hand and with high urgency since last night.”
Investigations are being conducted by German state prosecutors, alongside the Central Office for Extremism Saxony (ZESA) and officers from the Police Terrorism and Extremism Defense Center (PTAZ) counter-terrorism law enforcement unit. A NATO official stated that ‘we are aware of the incident, which the German authorities continue to investigate’.
