On 5 September 2026, two improvised grenades were seized during a police operation in Vargem Grande, Rio de Janeiro. One of the devices reportedly consisted of a red motorcycle kickstarter with preformed fragmentation. No arrests have been reported, and no individual or group has claimed responsibility. In recent months, there has been an increase in IED, RCIED and UAV related events across Brazil, with a growing number of events attributed to criminal organisations.
Brazil’s Presidential election is scheduled to take place on Sunday 4 October, with a runoff planned for 25 October if required. Recent polling is tight between Incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and right-wing challenger Flávio Bolsonaro.
